What to Do When You Notice an Unusual Battery Odor

An unfamiliar odor near a battery can indicate overheating, leakage or charging trouble. Treat it as a safety signal and avoid direct contact.

Do not ignore a new odor

A strong chemical or sulfur-like smell may be associated with a damaged or overcharged battery. Keep people away and follow the site's emergency and ventilation procedures.

Observe without touching

From a safe distance, note heat, swelling, smoke, leakage or alarms. Do not disconnect or move the battery unless qualified and authorized to do so.

Quick checklist

1Keep ignition sources away
2Avoid direct contact
3Follow site safety procedures
4Request qualified inspection
