What White Powder on a Battery Terminal Means

White or blue-green buildup can increase electrical resistance and feel like a weak battery. Inspect the terminal safely before assuming the battery itself has failed.

Corrosion can imitate a starting problem

Deposits or a loose connection can interrupt current flow and cause slow cranking, flickering lights or intermittent power. The battery may still be usable after the connection is serviced.

Avoid forcing a damaged connection

Do not pull, scrape or twist a heavily corroded terminal without proper protection. Photograph the condition and request inspection if the cable, clamp or battery case appears damaged.

Quick checklist

1Turn off the engine
2Do not touch deposits with bare hands
3Photograph both terminals
4Check for a loose clamp or damaged case
